The publisher creates, negotiates and enters into a contract with the author.
The publisher owns the creative rights to the book.
It is the publisher's responsibility to transform the book into a salable product. It is their job to format the book into a manufacturable product.
The publisher works to manage this product through their existing distribution channels.
They work to create new revenue streams where it is a fiscally sound thing to do.
They enter into contracts with distributors, wholesalers, other types of resellers and retailers.
The publisher gets publicity for or teach the author how to get publicity for themselves and their book project(s).
They track all sales and pay royalties on an agreed upon time schedule.
The Author:
The author's role is the same whether you self-publish, commercially publish, partner publish or create some new way to get your message out there.
Your role is to write the book and then
your role is to PROMOTE your book! &
persist in promoting your book as long as that book is relevant to readers!
If you take on other roles, such as publisher, in the self-published scenario, so be it - you've taken on another role, but your role as the author is still the same. You might have taken on manufacturer and distributor, but being the major player in the book's promotion is still all yours.
Your publisher, if they're smart, will train you in the skills necessary, but in the end, the work will fall on you. Your publisher will give you the car, but if you don't drive it - you will go nowhere.
