The Graphic Designer (Cover Designer):

You can't "tell" a book by its cover
but you can "sell" a book with its cover!

Some experts say that 60% of all buying decisions are based on color alone. When designing your book cover, color is a major consideration. Do you know the color that evokes hunger? Do you know the color that evokes trust? Etc?Many people think that they can design their own book's cover and many can, but if you don't already know the answer to the questions above, then learn more or consult an expert. Design is a whole field unto itself and it can make or break your book. Your book's cover is its ambassador to the world, be sure to do it right.

If you commercially publish, you'll probably have little to input on this topic and your publisher will hire experts in this field. However, if you maintain your creative rights, then you will need to address this issue and give it very serious thought.

The following illustration is the evolution of my cover for Angel On Board. It is obvious which ones had a profession graphic designer's help and which ones did not. I only spent $50 getting my dream cover. It will probably be more expensive now, but it isn't cost prohibitive. Even it cost me 10 times that, I'd have more than made it back in book sales. You will need to invest in your project to see a greater return.

Cover design is not the place to cut corners!

My book started with a dark purple cover with white print, with only a halo over the "A" of Angel On Board that gave it any distinction whatsoever.

When dragons and other winged creatures roamed the earth...
Clearwater Falls
by J. Richard Knapp

The goblins noticed that the light from above the mountain
was beginning to get dimmer and dimmer.
Their eyes looked upward slowly.
At every edge of the mountain,
there was a dragon looking down on the them...
