A thoughtful and educational book for children., January 27, 2004
Reviewer: Jennifer Wilde (Bellevue, Washington United States)
A Dolphin's Tale is a thoughful and educational book for children. The book centers around a sweet love story between a dolphin and a human while providing the reader with history and facts about fresh water dolphins. The vocabulary and length of the book are probably best suited for children preschool age and above.

Emily Wing's review of A Dolphin's Tale, October 20, 2003
A job well done, Mr. Blake.
A well written story that is deep, inspiring, and thoughtful. I enjoyed the story very much. This is a wonderful story for children as well as older people. Even me, as being older than 'a child' enjoyed the story very much. While there are some 'big words' for a child to understand, one could only use those 'big words' to entirely describe the situation.

a really cool book, yet somewhat serious, June 18, 2003

I felt this book was inspiring. It lifted me away while I was reading the pages. It isn't just a book to read to your 5-year-old child to make him fall asleep, it is more than that. You could read this book to a 5-year-old, a 10-year-old, even a adult could enjoy this book. What really inspired me was the way pedro; the main character, had his heart broken yet fell in love with the dolphin, angelique. You will enjoy this book the second you open it, I sure did! It's a really cool book, but still somewhat serious.

A book for the young and old at heart, October 2, 2002
Reviewer: Julia (Auckland, New Zealand)

A Dolphin's Tale is an amazingly written story about a dolphin and a young boy. As a 19 year old i really enjoyed reading this story and the children that i look after also enjoyed this story being read to them. This is a perfect story to read to children of any age especially at bed time. A non scary lovely story thats definately worth the read.

Map of Amazon River in South America

The Amazon River is the greatest of all the rivers of the world.

It is often called the Ocean River because it is so large. The Amazon drains the water from the largest rainforest in the world.

Much of the Amazon is very mysterious. One of the most mysterious creatures in the river is the Amazon freshwater dolphin. Smaller and even more graceful than dolphins that live in the open ocean, the Amazon freshwater dolphin, or buffeo, has been sighted more than a thousand miles upstream from where the river enters the sea. Amazon river dolphins are also known as pink dolphins because, although they are born gray, they turn pink with age.

Some tribes of people native to the lands surrounding the Amazon speak of a legend of magical dolphins. This is the story of one of those magical shape-shifting creatures, a very special buffeo, named Angelique…

* * *

Angelique was a beautiful and graceful buffeo dolphin. She lived about 200 miles upstream from the Amazon delta, where the mighty river meets the sea. She was about one and a half meters long and she was five years old, which in human years would be about 11 or 12.

Angelique was a curious young dolphin, and her curiosity often got her into trouble.

Angelique often learned the hard way to avoid the many dangerous creatures that lived in the river, from electric eels to huge Anaconda snakes, from crocodiles to the occasional jaguar that jumped into the river to fish or just swim. Of course, Angelique knew that she was much faster than any of these animals in the water, and she usually could avoid them easily.

When she was younger, one of Angelique's favorite games would be to tease some dangerous creature. She most often played the game by pretending not to notice them as they were stalking her.

Occasionally, she would even let the crocodile, or whatever it was, think it was just about close enough to strike. Then, she would dart away so quickly that sometimes the crocodile was left wondering if she had simply been a mirage.

Sometimes Angelique would play near a village and notice the human children playing, just as dolphins love to do. Often she was so fascinated by their games that she would watch them for hours, trying to learn how to play the game so that she could teach it to her dolphin brothers, sisters and friends.

One of Angelique's favorite human games was stickball. Stickball was a game that she had a hard time adapting to being played underwater.

Fortunately, the rubber ball floated, and when it was hit into the slow-moving river, it almost seemed to lay motionless. When somebody hit a ball far out into the river, she would try to go after it and use the wake from her head to push the ball back towards the shore.

It was one day when she was returning a ball, which had been hit particularly hard, that she first noticed Pedro.

The children had never quite figured out why, no matter how many times they hit the ball in the river, it always returned. That day, Pedro had hit the ball harder than anyone he remembered had ever hit it. After he ran around the bases, he went with the other children to the shore of the river to see where the ball had landed. The ball seemed to be moving right towards them completely on its own when Pedro rolled up his pant legs and waded out into the water to get the ball.
