If ever there was a perfect all-time fantasy football team - this is it! The Perfect Draft examines the draft picks of the last 45 years and Nichols selects who he thinks is the best of all time for that draft pick. Fun new way to stir up football conversation. Love it - hate it - agree or disagree, your choice, but these 224 all-time great football players belong in "The Perfect Draft".

Believe it or not but...

  • The #1 Quarterback of all time (from 50 Seasons of Quarterbacks) was drafted in the 7th round!
  • No school had more than 8 representatives in The Perfect Draft. Stanford only had one - and it wasn't John Elway!
  • Pittsburgh had 17 players make the perfect draft, but Carolina only had 1!
  • The year where the most players were chosen for The Perfect Draft was 1983...

In 1967, the NFL and the AFL held their first joint draft. For the six years previously, the two leagues had competed against each other, drafting the same players. Merlin Olsen was not only drafted by the Los Angeles Rams but also by the Denver Broncos. Joe Namath was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals as well as the Jets. But for the past 45 seasons, the two – now one – leagues have sat together and jointly selected from the nation's pool of great college football players.

Looking back over the past 45 years, Nichols wanted to assemble the best picks of all-time, or "The Perfect Draft." Who was the best player at each pick? What would such a draft look like?

To begin with, the current basic draft will consist of 7 picks for each of the 32 teams. That's 224 picks before things like compensatory or supplemental picks arrive to muck things up. So that's what I did, the best of each of the 224 picks.

I realize this method puts players of more recent drafts at a disadvantage. They don't have the body of work to match up with the like of Favre or Lambert or Singletary.
